Deserted Clinics

September 7, 2010

This is how the clinic looked liked today, the 28th Ramadan. Empty, deserted, & unusually quiet. This is an unusual occurrence because it is the end of Ramadan and people are sleeping the day off or have already FLED the country to spend Eid abroad. Today, less than 10% of the patients showed up and people who missed their appointments will probably come back after the Eid holiday asking for a near appointment. Good luck with that since the schedules are already full.

Empty waiting area

 Quiet children's play area

Empty & neat doctor's office. Clean unused bed sheets.

Doctor's stuff waiting for patients that never showed up.

Zain's Ramadan Gift.

Personalized Zain's package

This Ramadan I received a gift from Zain for being a loyal customer for so many years. A prayer set (prayer mat, rosary, Qibla compass, Quraan, and prayer gown) all in a beautiful box. Not bad, thank you Zain although my brother got a mobile phone as a gift from you but I guess this goes with Ramadan theme.

Beautifully presented inside this box

The whole kit & Kaboodle. "Quraan, prayer mat, prayer gown, Qibla compass, & rosary".

Qibla compass, rosary and prayer mat all inside this really neat matching cloth bag.

"For Non-Muslims

September 5, 2010

While visiting Dubai, we noticed there is a pork shop in every supermarket with a sign "for non-muslims". In fact once we walked right into the shop without noticing the sign because it was in the corner and small. I know that the authorities in Dubai, or in the UAE in general, caters these foods as well as liquor for the expatriates who account for the majority of its population and that would probably make life easier for them being away from home. On the other hand, people coming to work in a muslim country should abide by the rules and regulations of this country. They have to be prepared to live without certain luxuries they used to have at home in sacrifice for having a well-paid job.
What concerns me about restaurants serving these foods & drinks is the possibility of using the same utensils for preparing, cooking, or serving these food & drink items and preparing our food. So the best thing to do is avoid eating in such restaurants altogether.

Van Gogh Painting Update

August 23, 2010

2 days later and still no news about the whereabouts of the Van Gogh painting.
The Egyptian Minister of Culture announced that the painting was recovered then he said it wasn't and to sum things up, I think it was an INSIDE job. Someone who knew exactly how things worked (or did not work) in the museum & took the chance to steal the painting.
Here are some facts about the robbery:

1) There is an appointed guard for the painting round the clock while the museum is opened BUT he took a prayer break and no one replaced him.

2) The painting is placed in a special room with railings and the painting was attached with strings connected to movement censors that would give an alarm if the painting was moved, unfortunately, the censors were not working.

3) There are 43 cameras in the museum that could have caught the thieves on tape but guess what 7 only were working.

4) Only 11 people visited the museum on that day, so how hard is it to capture the thieves?

Truth is, the painting is probably safe now in the basement of an art collector who appreciates this kind of artwork and would give it the attention and care that it deserves, Who knows may be the painting would 'mysteriously' appear after a year or two AGAIN in the garbage in some other country.

Unfortunate Painting

August 23, 2010

On August 21st,, ‘Vase with Flowers’, the Van Gogh painting was stolen from Mahmoud Khalil museum in Cairo. The sad thing about the whole incident is that this painting is probably the most expensive thing in the whole museum, valued at 50 million dollars, yet it was neglected in the sense that it was left unguarded which gave a chance for the thieves to grab it & flee.  This is the second time this unfortunate painting is stolen, the first time circumstances is still a mystery since it was found 2 years later in KUWAIT & no perpetrators were found. There was a question about its authenticity, which was then confirmed to be the original Van Gogh.
