Bawabat Al-Shamiya

October 4, 2010

When you’re done shopping at Souq Al-Mubarakiyah and feeling hungry you would most definitely be attracted by the aroma of freshly baked fatayerI at ‘Bawabat Al-Shamiya’ restaurant. If you pay them a visit you would be in for a treat as you can choose from a variety of freshly baked fatayer made to order. From the usual plain cheese and labna to the more diverse mixed eggs, sausage & cheese pizza-like fatayer. They also have shawarma especially in the afternoon. The place is clean and the best thing is you can see the chef while preparing your order through the glass then it goes straight to the hot oven and voila enjoy.

While you’re waiting for your order, which may take a few minutes when the place is busy especially in the morning as people flock for breakfast or brunch, you can spend the time examining the pictures hung on the walls, which are mostly about Kuwait in the olden days with accompanying pictures of Kuwait rulers from HRH Sheikh Abdulla Al-Salem Al-Sabah all the way to the present HRH Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. There are also pictures of old Kuwaiti artists like Abdul-Hussain Abdul-Ridha among others.

Last time in there we ordered a cheese and an egg fatayer and they were just delicious. The cheese had melted perfectly & was not too salty and the egg was fresh & so tasty.

You can also order delivery service if you’re living in nearby places in Kuwait city just call & ask if they deliver to your place. I highly recommend eating in as you can have your order hot & fresh straight from the oven.

‘Bawabat Al-Shamiya’ is located at Mubarakiyah, opposite money exchange market.

A Parking No-No

October 3, 2010

This happened at Souq Al-Mubarakiyah at 4.00 pm just about 100 miters from the parking lot. And frankly it was so quiet that there was no line at the entrance of the car park, which is the case at the morning hours or later on in the evening. The thing is the parking costs you 150 fils for the first hour then 50 extra fils for each additional hour. Are people that stingy that they would rather park in a non-parking zone than spend a ‘sandwich-worth’ of money for parking? Mind you if they got caught they would pay a lot more than that for an illegal parking ticket.

Doctor's Ghutra - غترة الدكتور

October 3, 2010

The other day I went to buy some traditional clothes from one of the stores that specialize in these things. If you’ve been to one of these stores you will notice that although they are small in area they are packed with merchandize and in most instances you would find what you’re looking for even if it's not on display. All you have to do is ask and if that store doesn't have it, the salesman would gladly bring it from one of his friends at another neighboring store.

And that what happened in our case, we were left waiting till the salesman brought what we asked for from another store. While we were waiting, I noticed this item: ‘Dr’s ghutra’ which for non-Arabic speaking is the headdress worn by men in Kuwait & other neighboring Gulf countries.

Since I was waiting and had time on my hands, some silly questions came to my mind.
First of all, I never thought that doctors had their ‘ghutras’ specially made for them and secondly can they wear other brands or are they stuck with this one? Are they going to be deprived of their medical knowledge by some unforeseen power if they wore other brands?

On the other hand, can non-doctors wear the 'Dr's ghutra'? are they even allowed to buy it? And would it make them more medically oriented if they did? Well If the latter happens, people would buy it by the bundle. What do you think?

Amiri Doctors' Cafeteria

September 19, 2010

A while ago I posted pictures of the doctors' cafeteria at Amiri Hospital on Facebook but I'm gonna revisit that subject after reading 'ilsul6ana' blog about Amiri outdated rooms & furniture. LINK

The doctors' cafeteria is located at the basement of the hospital just in front of the Morgue, talk about an appetizing location , and the moment you walk through its door you are hit in the face with the heavy thick cigarette smoke because doctors usually smoke in there and frankly I don't blame them. There are no assigned rooms for smokers in the whole hospital neither for workers nor visitors which compels hem to smoke anywhere in the hospital even in packed jammed elevators. On top of that, the cafeteria is one small closed space with no windows and lacking a good ventilation system.

Coming back to the furniture, chairs are non-matching, some are patio furniture, ALL are of cheap quality, non-sturdy and break easily.

Furniture fit for a patio & not a supposedly high class hospital

Although broken, still can be used if you don't mind a backache.

And when this happens the broken chairs are not thrown out, instead they are stacked at the corner one on top of the other.

The dreaded corner. The 'cemetery' of broken unwanted chairs.

The latest invention the Management introduced to the cafeteria are the siamese-twin chairs, these are 2 chairs that are connected together by bars and when sitting on these chairs you are forcibly bound to your neighbor with restricted movement and no freedom to move the chair as you please.

Siamese-twin chairs. Try to move them from one table to another. You need to work out in order to do that.

At peak meal times, you are lucky to find a chair to sit & have a decent meal & I'm not even gonna write about the food quality, its cleanliness (or the lack of it) because that needs another lengthy post. Often tables are lacking chairs as it seems there are never enough to accommodate all the staff especially during on-calls which forces the doctors to have their meals inside the on-call rooms, needless to say, this attracts cockroaches & cats which compete with the doctors for the rooms

Tables devoid of chairs. Fancy eating standing up? Best way of saying" GET OUT"

Sweet Treat-'ment'

September 17, 2010
Decided today to order out, being a Friday and the weekend and no one's in the mood to cook. So, after taking requests from all family members, picked up the phone & ordered from 'Babak' grill house a few things including a DOZEN cream puffs for later with coffee.

When the order arrived, I found out they've delivered only 'half' a dozen cream puff pieces, 6 instead of 12 although they've charged me for a dozen.

So, I called them back and the operator promised to send the rest of the order immediately. In the meantime, we had our lunch and nearly forgot all about the missing 'half' order & by the time we were ready to make the coffee, the door bell rang and it arrived. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the restaurant sent us a full dozen, may be that was their way of apologizing for not getting the order right from the first time.

At the end of the day, I was happy for getting what I've ordered in the first place AND the restaurant is happy for knowing that what they did to compensate for their mistake would definitely win me over as a customer. These restaurants are worthy of making business with because they respect & value their customers.

Way to go 'Babak' :)))

TV's Baaaack

September 15, 2010
Two days back I posted about our TV suddenly shutting off. As the satellite guy was coming today to exchange the receiver in my brother's apartment to an HD device, we've agreed that we could survive without TV for 2 days & have the two tasks done on the same day. Meanwhile, we spent that time between the net, catching up with friends on Facebook, playing computer games, & watching movies on DVD. Watched 'Shutter Island' yesterday, so dark & weird till all the pieces fall in place at the end.

Anyway, after waiting and waiting and waiting for the maintenence guy, he finally arrived and fixed the satellite and VOILA life came back to our TV & all the wonderful, entertaining channels & programs were back again in their full glory.

Now, we can race the kids to the remote control & flip the channels to catch up on our favorite programs. And what is better than starting with the 'Food Network' channel. Even the kids like to watch it. Yummy.

Lost in Translation

September 13, 2010

I've pinched this photo from the site of one of my Facebook friends, so thank you Dr. Zaid. The moment I saw it I could not resist but to publish it.

I think the person who made the translation from Arabic to English did that literally word for word and missed the whole meaning. Or he just wrote down the first word he found under the meaning of 'مراقبة' which actually has many meanings in Arabic. A better translation would probably be "Security Cameras At Supermarket" and a word of warning like 'beware' or 'attention' up front.

TV Shutdown :(((

September 13, 2010

TV just went dead. The receiver went crazy and suddenly shut off while the kids were watching one of their 'kid-stuff' programs for the 100th time. And with 2 certified engineers at home, one of them an electronics engineer, the problem could not be solved but we narrowed the problem to the receiver. Therefore, I think it's time to call the professional.
As for tonight. I'm declaring it either a 'DVD' or a 'surf-the-internet' night.

The Wrong Mountain

September 13, 2010

One of my Facebook friends posted this cartoon and referenced it to "career" choices that one makes and that he may still look around for better jobs then realizes that his job was the best.

Although I agree with that, this brings to mind a play I have seen on Broadway about a decade ago called "The Wrong Mountain".

The play is about Henry, a 60-year-old man, who spent all his life writing poetry for a living but could not get the fame or fortune that he expected to achieve from this career. His personal life was in shambles, he was divorced and his wife got to live in his old ancestral house as a divorce settlement, and to top that, the ex-wife's fiance' was living there too.

One Christmas he was invited to a family gathering and his wife's fiance' (who is a successful playwright) was also there and they got into this heated argument about who is intellectually better a poet or a playwright and this ended up with a bet that if Henry could write a play and get it produced within 6 months he would get $100,000.
Not only Henry wrote the play (which was about their dysfunctional family) but also produced it & entered a local theater festival & won first prize.
During all this process, he liked writing the play and realized that "he spent most of his life climbing the wrong mountain" by pursuing a career in poetry and that in reality he is much better a playwright than a poet.

So my point is it doesn't hurt to think about other options in life especially career-wise, just don't spend all your life doing so and stick with the thing that you like & do best.

Stray Dog

September 7, 2010

Today afternoon we found a stray dog lying under a tree in our small garden at the front of the house. It looked tired, thirsty & hungry. My brother & the kids took out water & 'cat' food for the dog. Afterwards, the kids wanted to bring the dog inside but they were told it was unclean & we didn't know what diseases & bugs he might harbor. I suggested calling animal control but that suggestion was turned down because eventually the dog will be put to sleep. So in the end we decided to wait & see. We'll keep him well fed & he will hopefully keep us safe & sound.
