Marble Arch, London.

Posted by Simply Me on Sunday, July 17, 2011, In : London

Marble Arch is a white marble monument at the junction of Oxford Street, Park Lane, & Edgware Road, almost directly opposite Speaker's Corner in Hyde Park in London, England. It is directly across from the Marble Arch tube station.

The name "Marble Arch" also refers to the area in west London where the arch is situated. Historically, only members of the royal family and the King's Royal Horse Artillery were allowed to pass through the arch during ceremonies.

The arch was designed in 1828 by th...

Bath, Somerset County.

Posted by Simply Me on Friday, July 15, 2011, In : London
Bath is a city in Somerset county 156 km west of London. It was first established by the Romans in AD 43 as a spa with the Latin name, Aquae Sulis (meaning 'the waters of Sulis' dedicated to the goddess Sulis Minerva) and they built baths around the natural hot springs. During the Georgian era it became popular as a spa town and much later in 1987 it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site which made it a major center for tourism with over 3.8 million visitors each year.

London Underground

Posted by Simply me on Monday, July 11, 2011, In : London

London underground or the 'Tube', as the Londoners call it, is a rapid transit system in the big city and is used by thousands of people everyday, locals as well as tourists. It's the fastest & most convenient way to get from one place to another in no time bypassing the busy & crowded streets of London. The underground usually gets very busy at the rush hour; therefore, it's better to ride it at the 'off peak' hours which can be a bit cheaper as well.

It is the oldest underground railway in...

'Kodak Moments'

Posted by Simply Me on Thursday, December 23, 2010, In : Dhow Cruise

I haven' been posting for ages but I'll try to post one at least everyday from now on. So here goes.
These pictures were taken in November, 2010 during my last visit to Dubai.
I snapped these pictures while waiting for the Dhow Cruise to sail off along Dubai Creek and I'm posting them just for FUN.

1) This is a boy. He was walking alone with his parents. Gender identity crisis? May be. Well, if his parents are OK with that, it's nobody's business.

2) I was surprised to see Queen Elizabeth 'loo...

Water: The Essence of Life

Posted by Simply Me on Sunday, November 28, 2010, In : Environment

Water is one of 4 necessities of life to all living things, according to 3rd Grade Science book, the others are air, food, & don’t forget light. Unfortunately, people are wasting this commodity like there is no tomorrow and I’m talking about the general public & those working for the government as well. EVERYBODY.

Just take a spin around your block in the morning any day of the week & count how many people are washing their cars with fresh running water.

In your own house, watch how...

A Night at the Opera

Madame Butterly

One of the most popular & frequently performed operas came to Kuwait. Originally, the story of John Luther Long and adapted by Giacomo Puccini appeared on the stage in a small scale production for 2 nights at Movenpick- Al-Bide' on the 13th & 14th October, 2010. It is somewhat devoid of all the spectacles & complexities of the other opers as it is based on one simple plot line that takes place in a small house in Nagasaki, Japan and I think that what made it possible to perfo...

Autumn is Here

Posted by Simply Me on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, In : Weather

Temperatures in the morning as low as 26-27 degrees.

So it's official, Autumn is finally here. There is a noticeable drop in the recorded outside temperature by around 3-4 degrees with a lovely morning breeze. This kind of weather usually continues till late March with only 2 weeks of wintery freezing cold weather in January. I hope this winter season comes with a lot of rain & not like the last 2 years which were extremely dry. Of course, thunder & rain bring with it 'Fage3' especially if ...

The Forgotten

Posted by Simply Me on Sunday, October 10, 2010, In : School

While I was heading home I noticed this girl who was standing all alone after all the other girls were collected by their parents, drivers, or maids. She was standing with her eyes fixed on the street corner waiting for her ride to show up. I can't imagine what went through her mind at that time because I was never left waiting under the scorching sun like that. Does this happen to her every day that she got used to it? Do they have to pick her brothers and sisters from other schools befo...

Hanging by a Thread

Posted by Simply Me on Sunday, October 10, 2010, In : Dangling Lamp

While my sister was picking the kids from school the other day she noticed this broken lamp which is dangling over the passersby in the street. This is dangerous because:

1-    It may fall & hurt somebody walking in the street or damage cars driving through.

2-    It may fall & electrocute people or cars underneath

God only knows how long it had been hanging like that but it has been 2 weeks since we took notice of. I hope it will be attended to and fixed before the weather changes wit...

Parking No-No 'Again'

Posted by Simply Me on Saturday, October 9, 2010, In : Parking No-No

Don't you just hate it when you try to get out of your parking space and can't because a car is parked behind you or at the curve near the exit and you have to drive over the pavement in order not to scratch that car, or most importantly yours, while trying to get out? Well, I do. And I find these people inconsiderate, rude, and above all they break the law. From now on I am going to post pictures of cars that are parked illegally or those causing inconvenience to others.

Bawabat Al-Shamiya

Posted by Simply Me on Monday, October 4, 2010, In : Food

When you’re done shopping at Souq Al-Mubarakiyah and feeling hungry you would most definitely be attracted by the aroma of freshly baked fatayerI at ‘Bawabat Al-Shamiya’ restaurant. If you pay them a visit you would be in for a treat as you can choose from a variety of freshly baked fatayer made to order. From the usual plain cheese and labna to the more diverse mixed eggs, sausage & cheese pizza-like fatayer. They also have shawarma especially in the afternoon. The place is clean and ...

A Parking No-No

Posted by Simply Me on Sunday, October 3, 2010, In : Parking No-No

This happened at Souq Al-Mubarakiyah at 4.00 pm just about 100 miters from the parking lot. And frankly it was so quiet that there was no line at the entrance of the car park, which is the case at the morning hours or later on in the evening. The thing is the parking costs you 150 fils for the first hour then 50 extra fils for each additional hour. Are people that stingy that they would rather park in a non-parking zone than spend a ‘sandwich-worth’ of money for parking? Mind you if they...

Doctor's Ghutra - غترة الدكتور

Posted by Simply Me on Sunday, October 3, 2010, In : Shopping

The other day I went to buy some traditional clothes from one of the stores that specialize in these things. If you’ve been to one of these stores you will notice that although they are small in area they are packed with merchandize and in most instances you would find what you’re looking for even if it's not on display. All you have to do is ask and if that store doesn't have it, the salesman would gladly bring it from one of his friends at another neighboring store.

And that what hap...

Amiri Doctors' Cafeteria

Posted by Simply Me on Sunday, September 19, 2010, In : Amiri Hospital, cafeteria

A while ago I posted pictures of the doctors' cafeteria at Amiri Hospital on Facebook but I'm gonna revisit that subject after reading 'ilsul6ana' blog about Amiri outdated rooms & furniture. LINK

The doctors' cafeteria is located at the basement of the hospital just in front of the Morgue, talk about an appetizing location , and the moment you walk through its door you are hit in the face with the heavy thick cigarette smoke because doctors usually smoke in there and frankly I don't blame th...

Sweet Treat-'ment'

Posted by Simply Me on Friday, September 17, 2010, In : Food
Decided today to order out, being a Friday and the weekend and no one's in the mood to cook. So, after taking requests from all family members, picked up the phone & ordered from 'Babak' grill house a few things including a DOZEN cream puffs for later with coffee.

When the order arrived, I found out they've delivered only 'half' a dozen cream puff pieces, 6 instead of 12 although they've charged me for a dozen.

So, I called them back and the operator promised to send the rest of the order i...

TV's Baaaack

Posted by Simply Me on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, In : TV
Two days back I posted about our TV suddenly shutting off. As the satellite guy was coming today to exchange the receiver in my brother's apartment to an HD device, we've agreed that we could survive without TV for 2 days & have the two tasks done on the same day. Meanwhile, we spent that time between the net, catching up with friends on Facebook, playing computer games, & watching movies on DVD. Watched 'Shutter Island' yesterday, so dark & weird till all the pieces fall in place at the end....

Lost in Translation

Posted by Simply Me on Monday, September 13, 2010, In : Lost in Translation

I've pinched this photo from the site of one of my Facebook friends, so thank you Dr. Zaid. The moment I saw it I could not resist but to publish it.

I think the person who made the translation from Arabic to English did that literally word for word and missed the whole meaning. Or he just wrote down the first word he found under the meaning of 'مراقبة' which actually has many meanings in Arabic. A better translation would probably be "Security Cameras At Supermarket" and a word of warn...

TV Shutdown :(((

Posted by Simply Me on Monday, September 13, 2010, In : TV

TV just went dead. The receiver went crazy and suddenly shut off while the kids were watching one of their 'kid-stuff' programs for the 100th time. And with 2 certified engineers at home, one of them an electronics engineer, the problem could not be solved but we narrowed the problem to the receiver. Therefore, I think it's time to call the professional.
As for tonight. I'm declaring it either a 'DVD' or a 'surf-the-internet' night.

The Wrong Mountain

Posted by Simply Me on Monday, September 13, 2010, In : Theater

One of my Facebook friends posted this cartoon and referenced it to "career" choices that one makes and that he may still look around for better jobs then realizes that his job was the best.

Although I agree with that, this brings to mind a play I have seen on Broadway about a decade ago called "The Wrong Mountain".

The play is about Henry, a 60-year-old man, who spent all his life writing poetry for a living but could not get the fame or fortune that he expected to achieve from this caree...

Stray Dog

Posted by Simply Me on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, In : Animals

Today afternoon we found a stray dog lying under a tree in our small garden at the front of the house. It looked tired, thirsty & hungry. My brother & the kids took out water & 'cat' food for the dog. Afterwards, the kids wanted to bring the dog inside but they were told it was unclean & we didn't know what diseases & bugs he might harbor. I suggested calling animal control but that suggestion was turned down because eventually the dog will be put to sleep. So in the end we decided to wait & ...

Deserted Clinics

Posted by Simply Me on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, In : Hospital, work

This is how the clinic looked liked today, the 28th Ramadan. Empty, deserted, & unusually quiet. This is an unusual occurrence because it is the end of Ramadan and people are sleeping the day off or have already FLED the country to spend Eid abroad. Today, less than 10% of the patients showed up and people who missed their appointments will probably come back after the Eid holiday asking for a near appointment. Good luck with that since the schedules are already full.

"For Non-Muslims

Posted by Simply Me on Sunday, September 5, 2010, In : Dubai

While visiting Dubai, we noticed there is a pork shop in every supermarket with a sign "for non-muslims". In fact once we walked right into the shop without noticing the sign because it was in the corner and small. I know that the authorities in Dubai, or in the UAE in general, caters these foods as well as liquor for the expatriates who account for the majority of its population and that would probably make life easier for them being away from h...

Van Gogh Painting Update

Posted by Simply Me on Monday, August 23, 2010,

2 days later and still no news about the whereabouts of the Van Gogh painting.
The Egyptian Minister of Culture announced that the painting was recovered then he said it wasn't and to sum things up, I think it was an INSIDE job. Someone who knew exactly how things worked (or did not work) in the museum & took the chance to steal the painting.
Here are some facts about the robbery:

1) There is an appointed guard for the painting round the clock while the museum is opened BUT he took a praye...

Unfortunate Painting

Posted by Simply Me on Monday, August 23, 2010, In : Art

On August 21st,, ‘Vase with Flowers’, the Van Gogh painting was stolen from Mahmoud Khalil museum in Cairo. The sad thing about the whole incident is that this painting is probably the most expensive thing in the whole museum, valued at 50 million dollars, yet it was neglected in the sense that it was left unguarded which gave a chance for the thieves to grab it & flee.  This is the second time this unfortunate painting is stolen, the first time circumstances is still a mystery s...
